Le he pedido a María Sáenz Quesada, miembro de la Academia Nacional de Historia, ex vocal de la Comisión Directiva y actual integrante del Tribunal de Honor del Club del Progreso, que nos hable sobre el Bicentenario.

Yo sólo voy a tomar un minuto para transmitirles dos sentimientos y una esperanza.

En primer lugar, es para mí un gran honor presidir en esta fecha un Club que ha estado tan ligado a la construcción de las instituciones argentinas.

Por otro lado, lamento que el espíritu de diálogo y de búsqueda de acuerdos con el que se fundó el Club, y que sigue caracterizándolo hoy, esté ausente de la vida política argentina.

Pero la Revolución de Mayo fue solamente el inicio de un proceso que culminó con la Declaración de la Independencia seis años después y se consolidó definitivamente en el campo de batalla de Ayacucho catorce años más tarde.

Espero que cuando nos reunamos en 2016 para festejar un nuevo Bicentenario encontremos a la sociedad argentina abierta al diálogo y a la formulación de políticas de estado que nos reencaucen en la senda del progreso.


Speech made by the President of the Club del Progreso at the celebration of the Bicentennial Anniversary of the establishment of the first locally-appointed government in Buenos Aires:

I have asked María Sáenz Quesada, member of the National Academy of History, former member of the Board of Directors and currently a member of the Court of Honour of the Club del Progreso, to lecture us on this bicentennial anniversary:

I will take only a minute to express two feelings and one hope.

It is for me a great honour to preside this celebration in a Club that has been so closely linked to the foundation of Argentine institutions.

On the other hand, I regret that the spirit of dialogue and search for agreements with which this Club was founded, and that continues to characterize it today, is absent from Argentine political life.

But the Revolution of May 1810 was only the beginning of a process that reached its climax six years later with the Declaration of Independence and was definitively consolidated in the battleground of Ayacucho fourteen years later.

I hope that, when we meet again in 2016 to celebrate another bicentennial, we may find Argentine society open to dialogue and to the formulation of multi-partisan policies that will place us again in the path of progress.
